TONIGHT! William Tyler (Merge Records) and Grow Well (Boone) // Espresso News @ Espresso News + Low Wine Bar
Apr 5 @ 9:00 pm – 1:00 am

William Tyler – Nasheville, TN on Tompkins Square Records; guitarist of late Silver Jews and Lambchop. Exceptional instrumental guitar for fans of John Fahey and Jack Rose. Voted one of Spin Magazine’s best artists of 2012.

Impossible Truth is William Tyler’s debut album on Merge Records. Rooted in apocalyptic expectation and bittersweet nostalgia, Tyler describes the record as “my ’70s singer-songwriter record; it just doesn’t have any words.”

2010’s Behold the Spirit, William Tyler’s first album under his own name, was celebrated by Pitchfork as “the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more” and established him as a critical favorite.

Impossible Truth will challenge your ideas of what an instrumental guitar record can and should be. As his friend and tour mate M.C. Taylor from Hiss Golden Messenger puts it, “William will worry a phrase—some tangled chordal wormhole—until you are certain it’s all that exists. He’ll take you over the stiles, he’ll love you up and down, and then he’ll make you cry for the world and what we’ve done to it.”

Water Liars- Misra/ Fat Possum Recs
“Pissed energy packed with solemn depression, leaning on the sides of agression and beautiful compassion and brokenness to an effect that makes all of the force feel and sound wonderfully wounded.”
– Daytrotter

“It is heartbreaking material, especially when savored alone — song’s reminiscent of writers like Raymond Carver and Flannery O’connor.”

TONIGHT! The Young Sinclairs (VA, F/NF Records)// June House // Slopes // Espresso News @ Espresso News + Low Wine Bar
May 3 @ 9:00 pm – 1:00 am

Young Sinclairs- Roanoke, VA
Even though they display a fondness for tube-amps, 12-strings, tambourines, spring reverb, and the analogue sounds of decades past, The Young Sinclairs are far more than just a fleeting retro act. Ever since the band formed in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Roanoke, Virginia in 2005, they have never veered from their original vision of creating harmonious pop tunes and unbridled rock excitement. They produce and record all of their own music in the personal all-analogue studio, The Mystic Fortress, and have concurrently been releasing albums themselves D.I.Y.-style and releasing them through a handful of different independent labels (Planting Seeds Records, Kindercore Records, and Chimney Sweep Records domestically – their latest two 7-inches are joint releases between France’s Requiem Por Un Twister & Croque Madame Records).

TONIGHT! Naked Gods // Estrangers (Winston-Salem) // Espresso News, yeah you heard right. @ Espresso News + Low Wine Bar
Jun 1 @ 9:30 pm – 12:30 am

ESTRANGERS make the kind of classic pop that hides in plain sight, the kind that lingers in the blown-out speakers of vintage thrift store amplifiers and makes you wonder why you stopped listening. Towering melodies, cavernous guitar reverb, lush analog synths and crashing bass & drums are bound together in their bright-eyed Rock and Roll stylings.

http://estrangers.com/

“In my dream, an ozone sky sucks the color from the seaside until it looks like a faded, hand-painted postcard. The beach is deserted, except for a distant gazebo where a clean-cut 1950s couple slow dances. And Estrangers provide the soundtrack. The lo-fi Winston-Salem sextet delivers dreamy/creepy fuzz-pop with yearning broken-hearted vocals. Boasting a gauzy sound that recalls the third, eponymous Velvet Underground LP, Estrangers evoke the pristine chamber pop of The Zombies and the wistful melodies of ‘50s crooner Ricky Nelson. Dual guitars add Jesus and Mary Chain bursts of over-modulated squall, augmented by a pair of jaunty-but-eerie Carnival of Souls keyboards and driving Dave Clark Five drums. It’s fun but slightly queasy, like stumbling upon a sock-hop hosted by David Lynch, complete with free nitrous oxide for all.” – Pat Moran, Creative Loafing Charlotte

NAKED GODS are a “hapless burly-pop prog-punk” quintet based out of the mountains of wes- alright, you’ve heard the spiel before, right? But if you haven’t seen this band live then crawl on out from under that rock and see what the bump in the night is all about. These guys make nervous energy cool, they’re raucous and in many ways larger than life. The ‘Gods are working on their third full-length album and will no doubt have some great new anthems to unveil.

TONIGHT! Nathan’s Birthday potluck w/ Viking Moses and Guardian Angel (Asheville) at Park Street
Jun 5 @ 8:00 pm

Viking Moses is coming back to Boone! This time in summer on Nathan’s birthday.

The VIKING MOSES was initiated by Southern Missourian Brendon Massei in 2003. The band has a dynamic, rotating cast of both established and obscure musicians worldwide, and is currently based in Northern Appalachia (USA).

More straight forward rock/soul than weird/folk as most of their contemporaries seem to be marketed, Viking Moses recordings are very accessible in convention, though live shows normally tend to have an unconventional approach, being hosted in unorthodox venues, often having assembled bands night-of, using members of support bands or strangers in the audience. Both aspects are delivered with utmost soul, passion, and humility, and always offer fans and strangers an experience which is unique and often contrary to expectation.

Viking Moses has been finding very fair attention since 2004, thanks to Devendra Banhart’s “Golden Apples…” compilation and good words, followed by a signing by Alan McGee (Creation Records founder, and manager of Oasis, Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Mogwai, Libertines, etc.) which has found Viking Moses high acclaim in UK and Europe, and kept them heavily active in that part of the world these past few years.

TONIGHT! Younger Siblings (Birmingham, AL) // Special Events // Meridian // Espresso News @ Espresso News + Low Wine Bar
Jun 15 @ 9:30 pm – 12:30 am

Younger Siblings, a “four-piece indie-pop band in the oddball sort of vein of They Might Be Giants or The Moldy Peaches,” are so much more than what their modest facebook band blurb suggests. These guys craft deceptively simple and clever songs that evoke all the levity and darkness of youth. If you caught the ‘Sibs the last time they came through Boone, you know that even with a boiled down lineup and skeletal instrumentation incorporating ukulele and electronic drums, these guys are an unsung stronghold of originality in the southeastern independent scene.

Check out their awesome split release with fellow ‘Bama shredders Nightmare Boyzzz, along with other cuts here:

TONIGHT! NYMPH (Brooklyn, Northern Spy) // Ben Scarboro // SEXINJURY // @ Black Cat @ BlackCat Burrito
Jun 24 @ 9:00 pm – 2:00 am

NYMPH is a Brooklyn-based psychedelic-shred/avant-garde outfit whose tempestuously transcendent music has penetrated the New York music scene with bared teeth! This, their self-titled debut album, was recorded by Jason Meagher (of No Neck Blues Band) at Black Dirt in upstate New York and mixed by David Tolomei at DNA in New York City from late autumn 2007 – summer 2009, and mastered by Sarah Register (of Talk Normal) at The Lodge studios in New York City. Originally self-released as a very special limited edition of 333 gatefold double LPs on their label Dog of Junipers, we at The Social Registry are very proud to be bringing the album to wider attention.

NYMPH’S compositional palette encompasses a shimmering kaleidoscope of sound: imagine 13th Floor Elevators essaying a Rahsaan Roland Kirk jam and you begin to get the picture. Or maybe Steve Reich bonging out on Pandit Pran Nath and jamming with This Heat.

NYMPH’s blissful spiritual vibrations and luxuriant execution of showering riffage are woven with an intuitive vocal expression largely free from the semantic bounds of lyric, ultimately finding form in a cavalcade of radiant melody & orgasmic modulation. Newly expanded to a 7-piece ensemble, NYMPH illuminates an extremely magnetic and ethereal live presence sculpted by the metronome of polyrhythmic tides, ebullient brass & subterranean harmonious drone:

“Free jazz, Improv and Psychedelia should be in constant and fruitful alignment. Yet they rarely are. Improvisors are too serious or austere for psychedelia’s transcendental whimsy, rock musicians too turned-on or musically limited to keep up with the jazz. Yet, like a ghost memory of that possibility, NYMPH emerge resplendent: wild, free and gloriously psychedelic…in a hinterland between the acid-fried rock of the Texas plains and the inner journeys of Can or Coltrane.” – The Wire

“NYMPH, from New York, sounds as if it’s from everywhere and nowhere. This group’s first, self-titled album, on the Social Registry label, begins with the sound of Matty McDermott’s hollow-bodied electric guitar, playing curled and emphatic Malian riffs with amplifier settings that sound like Neil Young’s, loud and tough and warm and hugely echoing. Then the record stops and starts through drum rolls and cymbal crashes and rattled bells, with theatrical yelping, wordless vocals by Eri Shoji. And that — give or take a clarinet, a shakuhachi and an electric bass — is pretty much the template for the whole intuitive and sensible, contemplative and bone-rattling album. It knows what it’s doing, and doesn’t need to make it too clear.”
– Ben Ratliff, NEW YORK TIMES

SEXINJURY –
This will be an infinity-off performance from a handful of Boone’s finest psych-lurkers. What it will be cannot be described until the zenith of its existence. Some foreshadowing may be explored at appalachianstudiesrecordings.com.
