GRASS WIDOW // KATTERWAUL // LISA FRANK // ESPRESSO NEWS @ Espresso News + Low Wine Bar
Feb 2 @ 9:00 pm – 12:00 am

Grass Widow
“The San Fran phenom Grass Widow,” as the New Yorker dubs this post-punk band, “inspires as its pastoral harmonies float effortlessly over trellises of spindly guitars.”

Grass Widow–Hannah Lew (bass, vocals), Raven Mahon (guitar, vocals), and Lillian Maring, (drums, vocals) write their hypnotic layered melodies collaboratively. Their haunting songs, rich in metaphor and couched in reference and allusion, are mined from the personal narratives of each. Vox duties shared equally all around complete the overall sensibility. Grass Widow has no front person but offers a fresh musical experience not based on celebrity or spectacle. Since their formation, in line with these principles, they have maintained their objective of playing age and gender-inclusive shows.

Grass Widow formed in 2007 and toured the US the following summer. Their first release came as a S/T LP on San Francisco’s Make A Mess Records in 2009, followed by a 12 inch EP on Captured Tracks and their 2nd full-length, Past Time, which came out in 2010 on Kill Rock Stars. The band toured Europe, the UK and China in 2010 and started their own record label, HLR.

In addition to The New Yorker, Grass Widow has been featured in Yeti Magazine, Nylon, ArtForum, and The New York Times, among other publications.

TONIGHT! PC WORSHIP (NYC) // WHATEVER BRAINS (Raleigh) // MERIDIAN (Boone) @ BlackCat Burrito
Feb 8 @ 10:00 pm – 1:00 am

“PC WORSHIP are a self-proclaimed ‘mutant soul band’ that skirts in and out of musical generalization and re-focuses creative energy on human psychosis and regenerating pieces based on varied human emotions / interactions. As a result PC Worship ventures amicably through mutated third stream folk, grunge and punk tendencies that are dually inspired by written pop songs and ambivalent free form nuclear jazz. Often time instrumentation is changed or warped based on the pool of about a dozen musicians whom mostly all live together in a warehouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY called Le Wallet, where at any given time a different assortment crawls out of their cave to rip what has been dubbed music of the second “Stone Age”. ”
-Burlington Miller (Rolling Bones Magazine)

“Raleigh’s WHATEVER BRAINS have been compared to a slower, drunker hives. Nail on the head, my friend. Some of the most genuine, nice guys you’ll ever meet, making the most fucked up, evil, catchy punk songs around.”
-Funny/Not Funny Records

Supporting the touring acts will be Boone’s own MERIDIAN – voluminous moody cave-wave featuring Sean Bos and Brennan Zerbe.

Ever-Ending Kicks- Fontee Fount Recordings/ Anacortes Washington, formerly known as Motorbikes. Paul Benson has toured and collaborated with Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie) and Karl Blau. Here’s what he has to say about this project:

The idea consists of the following but is not limited to these sentiments:
Tearing through skate shoes as the cost of progressing as a skateboarder.
Being so into something and then not.
Stationary objects you shove off of while making your way through your life.
Stationary objects that let you know you’re moving.
Fashion and function.
Ever Ending = Never Ending

GROW WELL ( Boone soul/country) // Micquela De Leon // Sam Fanthorpe // FREE show at Espresso News @ Espresso News + Low Wine Bar
Mar 1 @ 9:00 pm – 1:00 am

GROW WELL- Makes soulful psych country for fans of Flying Burrito Brothers and Townes Van Zandt.

Grow Well is a collaboration between Graham Nimens & Noelle Austin that was originally sown in the mountain of Western North Carolina in late 2011. The group was quickly transplanted to the hills of Northern California in the early spring of 2012, where the duet began to hone their skills while living on a rural ranch. The two began playing at nearby Orr Hot Springs where the name Grow Well (a play on the combination of their first names Graham+Noelle=Groelle=Grow Well) was coined. After an encouraging few months the two set out to continue their journey and had the pleasure to entertain folks at numerous gatherings including Oregon Country Faire and Burning Man. After an amazing first year Grow Well has returned to their home energized and is currently working to put out their first official release while still playing shows around the high country.

MICQUELA DE LEON- Great local slide guitar player playing the raunchiest of early blues

SAM FANTHORPE- performing classic and modern country songs

TONIGHT! LANTERN (Bathetic, Night People) // SHEER AGONY (Montreal) // HATS (Boone) at Black Cat @ BlackCat Burrito
Mar 3 @ 10:00 pm – 1:00 am

LANTERN (Philly; Night People/Bathetic Records)
Hailing from a city that David Lynch described as, “beautiful for its violence, hate and filth,” Philadelphia’s Lantern explores a wide and ominous sonic landscape – one which spans Nuggets-esque garage and scuzz, early American blues, proto-punk, apocalyptic synthscapes, dirges and train hopping balladry. Some of you may remember the raw power of Lantern’s last performance in Boone (here’s 7 videos, if not: http://vimeo.com/51600573), and for those of you that do, you know that this is not a band to miss.

SHEER AGONY (Montreal; Fixture Records)
“While other bands in Montreal set sail on the choppy seas of punk, garage rock, and harsh noise, these elegant fellows toss on their powdered wigs and dip from an entirely different pool. Zipping out off-kilter pop songs in the tradition of The Soft Boys, dB’s, and Homosexuals, their music strips away the scuzz and aims straight for the sweet spot.” -NOISEY

HATS (Boone)
A new project, a culmination of two deluded minds and a number of equally deluded sonic endeavors. A new breed of punk, set in a future world that is threatened by a nuclear holocaust.

TONIGHT! ROOMRUNNER (Fan Death, Baltimore) // THE KARLOFFS // Black Cat @ BlackCat Burrito
Mar 5 @ 10:00 pm – 1:00 am

ROOMRUNNER (ex-Double Dagger, Fan Death Recs, Baltimore)
“Roomrunner’s ready to draw the curtains on ’80s nostalgia and move on to the ’90s. Their terse muscularity, scratchy hooks and gritty throb signal that they’ve ingested the principal lessons of pre-Nevermind alt-rock. The music blends the spindly structures of Wire-inspired D.C. post-punk and the propulsive throb of Midwestern noise bands like Big Black and Tar with the hook-laden squall Nirvana adopted from the Pixies and the Vaselines.” -Chris Parker, Hopscotch
:::::: http://roomrunner.bandcamp.com/

THE KARLOFFS (Boone, of course)
A regular Boone institution, The Karloffs are one of the town’s longest-running punk outfits. These guys play straight-up American punk RnR in the vein of The Cramps or a burlier Ramones.
